As our Crystal Ball series continues, it’s time to drill down into specific sectors. Term Sheet readers, generally speaking, are an optimistic bunch. But there’s a lot of concern about whether we’re prepared to meet growing cybersecurity risks, with one reader predicting that even Fortune 500 CEOs will be in the crosshairs as high-stakes breaches materialize. AI, of course, is at the center of these escalating cybersecurity risks, and at the changes that are happening in industries like robotics and healthcare. But some industries, like fintech and crypto, have created their own waves of transformation and possibility. Without further ado…
As financial pressures mount across higher education, researchers are turning to machine learning to better predict which colleges are at risk of closing. In recent work, higher education researchers collaborated with the Federal Reserve to develop a predictive model that combines hundreds of institutional characteristics to estimate the likelihood a college might close. The model outperforms financial monitoring systems currently used by the federal government, offering a more nuanced understanding of financial distress in higher ed.WHY COLLEGES CLOSECollege closures remain relatively uncommon, but financial distress is more widespread. Small institutions, particularly those that rely heavily on tuition revenue, have little margin…
Proximie’s CTO explains how his firm innovates efficiently without cutting corners. By Richard Carter, Proximie Proximie Chief Technology Officer Richard Carter [Photo courtesy of Proximie]Innovation in healthcare often has a reputation of being slow, weighed down by safety requirements and complex regulation. Those safeguards are essential, but they can also lead to a sense that speed and rigor cannot coexist. In reality, this view fails to recognize that the tools we use to test new ideas can often take us much further than we expect. With the right engineering discipline, they can shorten the journey from prototype to product without…
Addison-based cybersecurity innovator Amera IoT has announced what it calls “a major breakthrough in quantum-proof encryption” with the launch of AmeraKey Encryption. The patented technology is designed to secure digital communications against both current and future computing threats, including quantum computing, the company said. CTO Tony Valentino As Dallas Innovates noted in July, Amera IoT has been racking up patents for its tech since its founding in February 2020. The company says AmeraKey Encryption is protected by “14 issued and granted U.S. patents” covering quantum-proof key generation, transmission-free encryption, entropy creation, and one-time-pad–based secure communications. A key difference in AmeraKey’s…

The Trump administration is withdrawing the United States from a handful of international organizations that work to strengthen cybersecurity. As part of a broader pullback from 66 international organizations, the administration is leaving the Global Forum on Cyber Expertise, the Online Freedom Coalition and the European Centre of Excellence for Countering Hybrid Threats. Trump’s decision is in line with a president who has expressed hostility toward the existing international order, an approach critics fear creates a leadership power vacuum for U.S. adversaries to fill. “The Trump Administration has found these institutions to be redundant in their scope, mismanaged, unnecessary, wasteful,…
SANTA CLARA, CA – January 08, 2026 – PRESSADVANTAGE – As organizations plan for 2026, a clear structural shift is emerging in how technical talent is valued and deployed. Amid this shift, Interview Kickstart has introduced an advanced machine learning and agentic AI program designed to help experienced software engineers transition into ML and AI engineering roles at leading technology companies. While traditional software engineering roles continue to play an important role in product development, their growth has slowed as automation, low-code platforms, and AI-assisted development reduce the need for large teams focused on routine implementation tasks. In contrast, demand…
