**Robot Dogs Revolutionise Factory Inspections and Safety in UK Manufacturing**
Highland, Scotland – Manufacturers across the UK are facing growing pressure to improve operational efficiency, worker safety, and data accuracy across sprawling, complex industrial sites. In response, the adoption of mobile robotics—specifically quadruped “robot dogs”—is accelerating as a transformative solution for inspection and monitoring tasks in difficult-to-access environments.
Andrew Hamilton, head of the Digital Process Manufacturing Centre (DPMC) at the National Manufacturing Institute Scotland (NMIS), highlights that modern facilities often include “sprawling, interconnected environments” where equipment operates continuously across large physical footprints. Manual inspections, once the norm, are labour-intensive, inconsistent, and increasingly impractical as facilities scale.
Robot dogs, such as Boston Dynamics’ Spot, are changing the equation. Designed to navigate stairs, uneven terrain, and confined spaces, these autonomous platforms can access hazardous or hard-to-reach areas with ease. Equipped with cameras, thermal sensors, and environmental tools, they collect time-stamped, location-linked data on a consistent basis, delivering high-quality situational awareness across a site.
Beyond improving visibility, robot dogs enhance worker safety by reducing the need for human presence in risky zones. They also support efficiency by enabling engineers to focus on analysis and decision-making rather than routine data collection. In sectors like maritime, shipbuilding, and process manufacturing—such as drink production where utilities like carbon dioxide are critical—these robots are being used to verify installations, monitor equipment, and track meter readings in real time.
The rise of industrial robotics is evident globally, with over 542,000 robots deployed in factories in 2024. Mobile robots represent a growing portion of this trend, as manufacturers seek flexible, non-disruptive ways to integrate digital capabilities. Robot dogs offer a practical entry point into digital transformation, often without the cost of permanent infrastructure upgrades.
As the technology evolves, greater attention is being placed on data integration, network coverage, and sensor selection. For early adopters, however, the benefits are clear: improved resilience, proactive maintenance, and a stronger competitive position. With their ability to extend human reach and enhance operational insight, robot dogs are helping UK manufacturers build safer, more efficient, and future-ready operations.
