Charles Hoskinson is building a more compelling argument for artificial intelligence as development on Midnight City advances. The Cardano founder now views AI agents as the foundation of how the network communicates and grows.
Here’s a summary of his recent comments, along with a deeper look at what Midnight City is aiming to demonstrate.
How Hoskinson Views AI’s Role in Cardano’s Next Chapter
AI agents operate on their own, handling trades, posting content, and coordinating tasks without a person at the controls. Hoskinson has embraced this concept after facing criticism over recent experiments connected to Cardano’s official social channels.
The backlash focused on a synthetic influencer that appeared on the Input Output account. The community was not happy about it.
Still, Hoskinson stood by the decision, calling it an open process of trial and error. He argued that the team is demonstrating what these tools are capable of rather than presenting only polished, finished results.
He also highlighted OpenClaw, an open-source agent framework he believes is gaining momentum at an impressive pace. For Hoskinson, that trajectory is a clear indicator. The future of crypto communication won’t rest on a small group of community managers posting updates in real time.
“We’re going to need agents and AI to be able to organize and sort all that out and broadcast on a regular basis what’s going on in Midnight City,” Hoskinson said. As a result, AI is now treated as core infrastructure for the entire Cardano ecosystem.

His logic is rooted in structure. A blockchain community expanding from thousands to millions of users can’t be sustained by simply hiring more people. Automation, therefore, needs to handle the day-to-day work of reporting, moderation, and outreach across every relevant channel.
Hoskinson outlined what lies ahead in bolder terms. He discussed AI-driven chief marketing officers, broadcasting tools that feel natural and human-like, and a long-term commitment to adopting every new standard that emerges. In his view, this shift will fundamentally change how protocols present themselves to newcomers.
Why Midnight City Is Emerging as the Proof of That Vision
Midnight City serves as a real-world demonstration of what Hoskinson envisions. Built on the Midnight Network, it’s a digital world filled with autonomous characters that carry on conversations, make transactions, and act according to the memory and personality programmed into each one.
Visitors can choose how they experience it. The standard view displays only what is recorded publicly on the blockchain. An auditor’s view, on the other hand, grants selective access to anyone with the appropriate cryptographic permissions, reflecting how real-world compliance could function.
A third mode, sometimes referred to as God mode, pulls back the curtain on each agent’s inner workings. Users can examine goals, memory, and history that would typically remain hidden. The goal is to show observers how selective disclosure actually works in practice, not just explain it in a technical document.
“It’s why it’s one of our most important projects and we’re leaning into it and integrating every single AI standard,” Hoskinson said. The Cardano founder added that the team will keep experimenting as the technology continues to evolve over the coming quarters.
The underlying infrastructure is designed for scale. Shielded transactions are first wrapped in zero-knowledge proofs. Batches are then processed within Trusted Execution Environments before being secured back to the base layer through cryptographic verification.
Hoskinson sees significant growth potential beyond the demonstration itself. Agent-driven trading and affiliate-style partnerships, he suggests, could bring millions of new users into Midnight as the simulation matures. That’s precisely why he considers the project one of the most critical priorities on Cardano’s roadmap.
The broader landscape also accounts for the sense of urgency. Crypto is advancing along two parallel tracks: privacy-preserving computation and the emergence of on-chain agents that coordinate economic activity.
